2020 Moo-ve it challenge progress update!

Just over three weeks ago we launched a challenge to travel 4,878 miles – the distance from our Orkney based office, over to where our US team are based. As time went on we realised we’d seriously under estimated how far we could go, so we’ve now increased our target distance to 9,505 miles. We caught up with some of our participants to see how it’s been for them so far…

Andrew Savill (Orkney)

I started strong, cycling every morning and doing weights 3 times a week as planned. Unfortunately, I increased my distance and volume too fast and ended up having to take some time to recover so I’ve now adapted my plan to include some recovery time.

On the days I’m cycling, or walking my dog Rosie, I saw a dramatic improvement in my mental health - even doing a small bit of cardio in the morning helped me through the day. This shouldn't be a surprise as many scientific studies have shown this but sometimes it's hard to push to get up out of bed early, especially now the mornings are getting darker!

It’s be great doing this as a team and seeing how other people have been getting their miles – I didn’t realise how active Kyloe was! I hope that these changes will lead me into habits that I can continue after this challenge is over.

Catherine Waters (Orkney)

I’ve really been enjoying the Moo-ve it challenge so far – it’s definitely making me more aware of how good it is to move and pushing me to get out! I’ve just had some friends visiting and we had a great time visiting Hoy and Yesnaby, and doing lots of gardening – all of which have contributed to my step count.

After getting a blister quite early on I dug out my faithful (but ancient) Merrell trekkers to avoid it happening again. I’m really enjoying the morning walks before work - I feel so energised and clear-headed after doing them, and the scenery is stunning – the days are getting shorter here as we get into Autumn so that should mean some gorgeous sunrises as I walk. Bring on the next 3 weeks!

Paul Sabatino (Chicago)

It’s been really great to watch the leaderboard and see how we’re moving as a team. I’ve been making good progress on the goals I set myself – I’ve been using my Peloton a lot more and on the weekends I’ve explored more parks, forests, and lakefront (see photo) within a 40 miles radius than I ever have before.

My fiancé and I have also been perfecting our wedding dance in between classes. Every step counts, right?

The challenge has pushed me to be more mindful of my activity. If I’m needing to clear my head or come up with a solution to a problem, I’ve found that getting out for a quick walk really helps. The only setback has been my Fitbit battery running out… if it’s not logged in the Fitbit then did it ever really happen?

We’ve had the distance increased now, so the next few weeks is going to be interesting – we’re used to being ahead of the pacemaker and so we all need to put in even more effort to get to the finish line!

Lee Whitaker (Sydney)

I love being challenged – from 30-day plank challenges, to Tough Mudder (and lots more in between), I’ve taken part in quite a few and find reaching an end goal really rewarding.

Pre-COVID I was really active and doing lots of gym classes but that’s not possible at the moment – being at home all the time was fun to start with but six months on the novelty has worn off and I’ve developed some bad habits that I’d like to change.

I’ve set myself a mini goal of 50km a week. To help me reach this I’m planning to do a mixture of walking, hiking, running, and sea swimming. I’m really lucky to live by the beach and in such a naturally beautiful area – there’s also a lake, national parks, and cliff walks – the stunning scenery it helps to take your mind off the fact that you’re exercising!

We’ve missed so many opportunities to get the Kyloe team together this year – I’m really looking forward to working together as a company-wide team. Knowing that my colleagues in Orkney might be battling against the elements means I have no excuse for not going out because of a bit of rain!
