3 tips for boosting productivity while working remotely

Although so many of us are now working remotely, there have never been more opportunities to stay connected and tools to bring us together. If your LinkedIn feed has been inundated with tips about how to successfully work from home then you are not alone. Now we've been in lockdown for over a month it feels like the basics (get dressed, use video calls, schedule breaks, etc.) have been covered, but what else can you do when you've got these mastered?

When are you most productive?

Fact: 66% of recruiters working remotely said they were more productive in the morning.

Tip: Schedule team meetings for the afternoon - this way you wont disrupt the work taking place in the morning, and you'll make the most of the less productive afternoons.

How importance is exercise to your work productivity?

Fact: 70% said that exercise is important to their productivity at work

Tip: Think about how you can incorporate exercise into motivating your employees. It doesn't have to be physically demanding - something like a step challenge is inclusive and free. Just 30mins of walking each day has been linked to coping better with workloads. Plus, we rarely meet a recruiter who doesn't like a bit of competition!

What are the main challenges you're facing while working remotely?

Fact: There's a delicate balance between staying motivated and not being able to switch off - most people we asked stated these as the two main challenges to working remotely. You might think these challenges are mutually exclusive but not being able to switch off after hours can lead to a lack of motivation during work time. Think of it like quality vs quantity - you want 8 hours of high-quality work, but if employees can't switch off you're more likely to get 16 hours of low productivity.

Tip: This is where different working styles really come to the forefront. For example, some people may feel a sense of guilt that if they can't be seen then it will be assumed that they aren't working as much. Others may find managing their workloads harder and feel completely overwhelmed so start to shut down despite being online more. Understanding the individual is key here and there's no one size fits all tip, aside from asking, listening, and then working through potential solutions.

We don't know what the new normal will look like when workers are allowed to return to offices, but what is apparent is that we need to consider our effectiveness and sustainability when it comes to remote working.
