The Gathering 2022

June 29, 2022
Collaboration regardless of location sits at the heart of the ‘One Kyloe’ culture. We recently held our company-wide event, 'The Gathering 2022' in the Orkney Islands. During the week-long event the company's 70 global employees had the opportunity to celebrate achievements and look to the future.

Check out Rob Mann’s highlights in this blog!

Exploring Scotland

Okay Okay. I got a week off in Scotland after a week of team meetings. I really enjoy Scotland, especially when it is sunny, and I had more days of sunshine than I did of cloudy rain.

First off, Scotland is a mix of modern and classic living in great harmony. As I write, I am on a train from Inverness (a must-visit, especially if you can walk by the River Ness on a sunny day). My view is one of massive wind turbines and sheep grazing with little lambs running around and the Scottish Highlands providing a stunning backdrop.
Secondly, the people I have encountered in Scotland are friendly and warm and generally want you to enjoy their homeland.

Thirdly, since my first visit to Kyloe's HQ in the Orkney Islands (off the very north coast of Scotland) last year, I have grown a taste for whisky and visited Tomatin, which Forbes rated as one of the world's best for 2022.

All that to say, visit Scotland if you can, in the Spring or Summer would be best, but the people of Scotland are a great crowd.

The Gathering

On to the Gathering, the 70 or so Kyloevians descended on Kirkwall (Orkney's capital) to look to the future and to learn and invest in our five values.

On day 1, we focused on the growth of Kyloe and what it's like to run a staffing business sitting down with Orkney's own Steven Shorter, CEO of Cobalt Staffing.
Day 2, we learned about our technologies and what it is like to organise a staffing company's tech stack with the brilliant Brian Cunningham of Allen Recruitment.

Day 3 is really where the magic of Orkney took over with the team taking field trips to see EMEC's tidal and wave energy setups and learning from the CEO of a waste management group in the UK, as well as from a solar expert. Truthfully as great as all of the sessions were, day 3 was so engaging, and it was definitely my favourite day.
On day 4, the leadership team brought us through how Kyloe will continue to grow and led us through our product roadmap and the innovations coming.

Day 4 also included a massively competitive field day made up of mental and physical challenges, and I must say the team at Kyloe is highly competitive, including our leader, Raymond Pennie, who competed in business casual attire and did not slow down (I guess that is how you set the tone).

We closed out day 4 with our annual awards dinner, where winners (nominated by customers and colleagues) were awarded their beautiful Orkney-made award, and of course, we all celebrated!
Day 5 was an excellent day for the sales and services team of Kyloe, where we took our conversations from day one and made a team plan to improve 1% the experiences of both our customers and our internal team. By each doing just 1%, the compound effect is something quite special.

Overall, I highly highly recommend a day/a few days/a week of your team stepping away from the day-to-day to work on your business and focus on your core values, so they are not just something that you write on the walls of your office and a page on your website.

On this trip, I also got to see my first live hairy coo (cow) – also known as a Kyloe - they are truly magnificent!
