Want better Bullhorn data? Here’s why training is key

The oil of the 21st century. You might ve heard this description of data before. One glance at exponentially growing tech stocks will tell you that information is now where the money is at.

Why is data such a valuable commodity? Because the answer to almost any question a business cares to ask can be found within it. It holds the secret to competitive advantage, to growth, to long-term and unbridled success.

But only if it s managed and used correctly.

Getting full value out of your Bullhorn data is no easy task. But if you take a strategic and considered approach, investing in the right areas the right way, you ll have a far greater chance of realising success.

Your data is your most valuable asset

Recruiting and staffing firms rely on data more than most. The industry demands both:

Quantity: A generous pool of candidates from which to choose, and
Quality: A high-end selection of candidates within the larger pool to put forward for specific roles.

Unhygienic data is next to useless

Most companies now use an ATS or CRM to store their all-important data (and those that don’t probably won’t be around for long). The most pressing issue isn’t access to data, it’s the hygiene of that data – the presence of incorrect, irrelevant, outdated or duplicate information in the system.

This unhygienic data is often next to useless – almost as bad as having no data at all. Endless time is wasted sorting the good from the bad, the true from the false, the current from the obsolete.

Hygienic and well-managed data, meanwhile, gives you the ability to find an answer to almost any recruitment question you might have, and the confidence to trust it. Ultimately this results in better quality candidates and increased placement rates.

Why is training so important

Technology is only ever as effective as its user. Without proper knowledge, your team will do nothing more than scratch the surface of what data can do. In the worst cases they could negatively impact your CRM/ATS investment.

According to a recent survey by SIA, just 52% of staffing professionals completely agreed with the following statement: I have been sufficiently well trained to make the best use of my staffing firm s technology.

That leaves 48% who either didn t completely agree or didn t agree at all.

The upshot: recruiting and staffing firms have an incredible opportunity if they invest in Bullhorn data management training.

5 training gaps you need to be aware of

1. Knowledge retention: Who is responsible for Bullhorn data cleansing, hygiene and management? If they leave, do they pass on their knowledge or do they take it with them?

2. Training new team members: Have you developed training that effectively teaches newcomers your data management processes? Once completed, do they have the skills needed to maximise their use of your tools?

3. Updating on updates:
Do you have systems in place to ensure you are alerted about and gain training on software feature releases, to get maximum value from every tool?


4. Communicating changes - When you make a change, let s say to a Bullhorn configuration, is it communicated clearly and quickly to everyone? Does this communication describe how the change will affect current processes, reports and automations?

5. Consistency of approach - Do you have established processes that everyone adheres to? An example: if different people use different statuses in Bullhorn, it can result in reporting inaccuracies and automation issues.

Most people are resistant to change. Why do things differently when the current approach seems to work fine? This mindset, which evolved over millions of years, might be fine for surviving the ancient plains of Africa, but it isn t so great for surviving the world of modern business.

Nevertheless, there are always people within your organisation who will be excited by the prospect of change; of being better, faster, stronger. And when you roll out a new data management solution, these Champions of Change can prove critical in driving the necessary internal communication.

Identify potential Champions of Change and get them on board from the very beginning. When the time comes to launch, you ll have a group who are invested in the tech and will act as internal ambassadors.

They don t need extra authority, like the ability to make mass updates. Their role is to offer feedback on process improvements, to help develop a plan of action for the new tool, and to share why it s so important that the wider team are invested in implementation and follow rules and best practices.
