Kyloe Wellbeing Week: mindfulness techniques 

In recognising the importance of creating a healthy workplace, Kyloe’s recently launched wellness programme encourages employees to prioritise their mental health. This week’s activities included a session with Adele Lidderdale from Yoga Orkney where staff took a 15-minute break out of their day to learn more about mindfulness.

“It’s easy to get caught up in the rush of everyday life, but the busier we are, the more we lose a sense of our own feelings and intuition” Adele said.

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is being aware of our ‘moment by moment’ thoughts; bringing our attention to being present; taking note of our surroundings and waking up our senses.

Benefits:
  • Reduces worry, anxiety, and stress.
  • Allows you to think more clearly and manage thoughts and feelings in stressful situations, instead of becoming overwhelmed or overly reactive.
  • Increases awareness of any tension or anxiety in your body i.e., racing heartbeat, tense muscles, or shallow breathing.

3 ways to incorporate mindfulness in your life

With many of us facing uncertainty and changes from lockdown, there has never been a better time to start practicing mindfulness. Here are some easy tips for getting started:

Practice meditation

Guided meditation is one of the best ways to become aware of your senses and how your thoughts come and go. Tip from Adele: “It’s best to have an open mind. The aim isn’t to think nothing but to simply acknowledge anything as it arises. Nothing is good or bad”. Thinking of these thoughts as passing clouds can help to acknowledge them and then let them pass.

Headspace’ is a great app for getting started.

Look for new perspectives

Noting everyday sensations - such as rain on your skin or the taste of your food - can interrupt your daily 'autopilot' mode and give new perspectives.

Breaking your usual habits and picking something new for lunch or a different seat at the table can also help you see the world in a new way.

Try deep breathing

Deep breathing can help to lower your heart rate, regulate your blood pressure, and help you relax. Repeat this technique three times when faced with a stressful situation:

  1. Breathe fully out through your nose.
  2. Put one hand on your chest and one on your stomach. The hand on your tummy should move more than the hand on the chest.
  3. Breathe in deeply and fill your diaphragm fully, filling your lungs with oxygen.
